Story Origins

While Leah’s Gals is loosely based on Shakespeare’s King Lear, the origins of the story itself predate Shakespeare’s play by several hundred years. It’s thought to have its roots in oral folklore and first appeared in physical form in the 12^th century in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, which documented the history and legends of the earliest Kings of Britain (with Lear originally named Leir). Among other writings of the time, Shakespeare is thought to have heavily sourced a play called The True Chronicle History of King Leir and his Three Daughters, Gonorill, Ragan, and Cordella, estimated to have been written around 1590 (author unknown), a mere decade or so before he completed his own definitive masterpiece.
